Photographing people can be about a lot of things, i.e., documenting an event or freezing a moment. Ultimately, it is about capturing the personality and revealing a story of the subject.

If you want to communicate to the world through your images, you should study the compositional rules and explore different ideas. Overtime, you will create excellent images by breaking the rules and exploiting fresh ideas.
Since high school years, I studied a collection of images of many famous photographers in the world. I am drawn to the photographs of Arnold Newman and Ansel Adams. I want to make photographs that capture the essence of the subjects.
Through the professional program at the New York Institute of Photography, the notion of focusing on the subject is further iterated. Very often, I take a minimalist approach at photographing people.
